I think I dozed off for a bit, because when I opened my eyes again, I was curled up on my side with an arm and a leg splayed over Lightning’s naked body. He had an arm hooked around my back and was stroking his other hand through my tangled hair, much like one would pet a sleeping cat.

“That was amazing,” I mumbled. I pressed my nose against his neck and inhaled his delicious musk. Why did even his smell make my body hum?

His arm constricted around me for a moment, pulling me closer to him, but he didn’t answer.

The unusual quietude made me glance up to see his soft lips pinched to a narrow line.

“Lightning? Is something wrong?”

His eyes flickered down to meet mine. A glimmer of unease swirled in their blue depths.

“Not a thing, Kittykat. Go back to sleep.”

So that was a lie. I blinked, my brain slowly pulling itself from the foggy depths of pleasure-induced sleep in alarm. With some effort, I raised up on an elbow so I could glare down at his still-masked face.

“Don’t you try to lie to me. Don’t you think we’re past that by now?” I made a sweeping motion over our entangled bodies.

Lightning scoffed. “You think every girl I fuck gets to know my secrets?”

The words were like a slap. I reeled back, grabbing for the covers to hide my naked form. “What did you just say?”

He sighed and pushed up into a half-seated position, resting on both elbows. “Look, don’t take it personally. I know the mark makes you susceptible to all sorts of feelings, but that doesn’t mean anything. I’m not your boyfriend, and we’re not going to do the whole ‘post-coital conversation.’ ”

Anger welled up to compete with the unexpected hurt blooming in my chest, caused by the man who had just spent a few hours making me feel so wonderful and safe. I’d not as much as mentioned any type of possible commitment, and—

Hang on.

The mark.

The goddamn mark.

I reached for the back of my neck where the remnants of his bite throbbed unpleasantly, as if it was agitated by my anger.

He’d bitten me. Again. He’d only fucked me so he could mark and claim me fully.

Realization made the anger tip into absolute rage. I lifted my hand and brought it down on his chest before I even knew what I was doing. The sting in my palm felt good—it distracted me from the betrayal threatening to overwhelm my heart.

“Get out!”

“Kathryn—”

“Get. Out. You come in here and think you can use me in your pissing contest with The Shade? And then you dismiss me, because you think I have feelings for you? I’m not the one who’s determined to claim ownership over you, am I? So get the fuck out of my apartment, and don’t you dare come back! I am not a thing you can own, and I am done with you. You hear? Done! Get out!”

For a moment we were staring at each other, and through my anger and hurt I thought I saw something… almost pained in the depths of his eyes.
